The caterpillars are released

On Tuesday we released our five beautiful butterflies. The painted lady butterflies flew out of the net and off to find a new home and lay their eggs. Soon, out of their eggs will hatch caterpillars and we'll watch the life cycle again.

Butterflies updated 2

Over night we had another butterfly hatch, so all five have hatched successfully. We have fed them some fruitand fresh flowers with nector.
They are painted lady butterflies and have yellow, red, orange and black speckled wings. They are getting more active and starting to fly around the net now.
We have removed the old cocoons that the butterflies have hatched out of and they look like this:

Butterfly update

We have welcomed four of our new butterflies into the world today! One hatched out of its cocoon last night, one this morning and two at lunch time.
They stayed still on the sides of the net for a while then began to open and close their wings. Red liquid came out of their wings as they stretched and dried their wings.
We have picked them some flowers, spread them with nector and laid them on the base of the net.

Caterpillars update.....

We have been looking after our five caterpillars for five weeks now. We watched them turn into their cocoons a week and a half ago. They've been hanging upside down, they've gone darker brown and we've moved them from their small tub into the larger net, ready for them to hatch into butterflies. Unfortunately, they haven't turned into butterflies before we've left to go on half term. They are coming home with me, I'll look after them here and keep you posted!
